How the Project Came Together
The Challenge
Weather exposure had left the deck surface dry and uneven, while the aging railing reduced both appearance and confidence in the space.
The Approach
The surface was cleaned and prepared methodically, localized issues were addressed, and the finish and railing details were planned as one visual update.
The Result
The deck regained richer cedar character, improved weather protection, and a cleaner railing profile that preserves the view.
The Details That Made the Difference
Good results come from the decisions made before installation, the care taken during the work, and how well the finished project supports everyday use.

Planning the Work
Deck boards, fasteners, localized deterioration, drainage, exposure, and the existing railing were assessed before refinishing. Weather windows and drying time were built into the sequence so cleaning, sanding, and coating conditions supported the finish.

Craftsmanship & Installation
The cedar was washed without unnecessarily damaging the fibres, allowed to dry, and sanded to improve consistency. Finish coats were applied methodically, while railing interfaces and perimeter details were coordinated for a clean transition.

Value for the Homeowner
Refinishing retained the character and useful life of the existing cedar instead of replacing it prematurely. The updated railing improves confidence and gives the deck a cleaner profile without sacrificing the mountain view.
